Decorative Concrete Overlay

A home or business owner's property starts to show wear and tear with each passing year.  No matter if it is the driveway, patio, pool deck, walkway, or sidewalk, the elements of the weather eventually catch up to these structures.  It doesn't matter if it is in the north with the harsh winters or in the south with the excessive heat.  So what is a home or business owner to do about this inevitable matter?  Either start over from scratch or use a great, state of the art product called decorative concrete overlay.  After all, both residential and commercial establishments are one of the most important purchases that people will ever make in their lifetime and it is very important to make the right choice when it comes to renovation.

So what is exactly happening when this occurs?  In a nutshell, the deterioration process is getting a much needed face-lift of the concrete nature.  This is a much more affordable procedure than the alternative of old concrete removal and the replacement after that.  

So where do you start?  When using this type of procedure, there is an endless supply of color combinations and designs that one can go with.  Thus, finding the right combo is the first thing to do.  Finding this combo has to include your requirements for these factors:  price of the job, how the final product will look, durability of the area, and maintenance in future years.   

So exactly what is decorative overlay?  It is a cement based overlay that contains blended polymer resins with sand, cement, and other additives that will improve the durability and appearance of the area.  When applied to the area of interest, the diameter of the overlay applied can as little as 2mm to as high as 5cm.  What happens upon application is that the substance will bond to the existing concrete and provide many great benefits of protection.  Things such as preventing damage from UV exposure, a wide variety of chemicals, salt, and scuffing.  Homeowners especially love to use this product for the pool deck because it keeps it cool and make walking on it without shoes a pleasure. 

So as you can see, using decorative overlay can work in many situations.  However, in rare cases, if the preexisting concrete has severe cracks in it or the area is not stable, resurfacing most like will not be the choice to go with.  That is when you will have to rip out the old concrete and replace with new.
